Black Kids in White Spaces, Open Mic!
Over the past few weeks I’ve been reading dozens of posts from Black parents, white parents raising Black children, educators, and people sharing their own experiences growing up as the only Black kid in predominantly white schools.
One phrase kept coming up over and over...
“Belonging is not the same as protection.”
That one stopped me.
As someone who has spent years producing conversations around Black Kids in White Spaces, I realized this isn’t really a conversation about race.
It’s a conversation about parenting.
It’s about the things we hope are true...
...and the things we eventually realize we have to prepare our children for.
As parents, we spend years getting our kids into the “best” schools, neighborhoods, teams, colleges, and careers.
But here’s the question I’ve been wrestling with...
Once they get there...then what?
How do we know they’ll be seen?
Who notices if they’re isolated?
Who speaks up when something isn’t right?
How do we teach confidence without teaching fear?
How do we teach discernment without teaching suspicion?
How do we prepare children to walk into any room without feeling like they have to leave pieces of themselves at the door?
And honestly...
This isn’t just a Black conversation.
Parents of neurodivergent kids...
Kids with disabilities...
LGBTQ+ youth...
Immigrant families...
Every parent who’s ever wondered...
“Who will advocate for my child when I’m not in the room?”
...knows this feeling.
One thing I’ve noticed over the past few weeks is that almost every post I’ve read about Black Kids in White Spaces eventually arrives at the same question:
How do we prepare our children for rooms we can’t always be in?
Not with fear.
Not with suspicion.
With wisdom.
With confidence.
With discernment.
That’s really what 1828 Academy is about.
Most parents don’t lack love.
They don’t even lack effort.
What many of us lack are models. No one handed us a roadmap for raising confident young adults who know who they are, trust themselves, and can navigate opportunity without losing their identity.
