Introducing Dr. Angelita P. Howard
When Family Hurts: Faith, Forgiveness & the Courage to Set Boundaries
Some of the deepest wounds we carry don’t come from strangers. They come from people we love.
Our parents. Our siblings. Our spouses. Our children. The people who know our history, helped shape our identity, and sometimes know exactly where our emotional buttons are.
We’ve all heard the familiar expressions:
“Family is everything.”
“Honor your mother and father.”
“You have to forgive and move on.”
But what happens when loving someone begins to cost you your peace?
Can you forgive someone without rebuilding the relationship? Can you honor your parents while maintaining boundaries? And what happens when two people who experienced the same family event have completely different versions of what happened?
These aren’t just questions about relationships. They’re questions about faith, identity, emotional safety, and the courage to tell the truth.
And they’re at the heart of our next Soul Thursdays conversation.
Meet Dr. Angelita P. Howard
We’re excited to welcome Dr. Angelita P. Howard, an accomplished educational leader, scholar-practitioner, ministry servant, and advocate for expanding opportunities in underserved communities.
Dr. Howard currently serves as Vice President for Global Education and Student Success at Meharry Medical College, where she helps shape academic strategy, digital learning, global partnerships, and student-success initiatives.
Previously, she served as the Founding Dean of Online Education and Expanded Programs at Morehouse School of Medicine, helping develop innovative academic programs and expand access to education.
She is also the Founder and CEO of Improving Access, Inc., an organization focused on bridging digital divides and advancing educational and healthcare equity.
Her achievements include recognition as Woman of the Year in STEAM and serving as a featured speaker for the White House Initiative on HBCUs.
But what makes this conversation especially meaningful isn’t simply her impressive professional background.
It’s the opportunity to explore the intersection of her faith, personal experiences, and the lessons she’s learned about family relationships, forgiveness, and personal growth.
Because sometimes our greatest lessons don’t come from our professional accomplishments. They come from navigating the complicated relationships that helped make us who we are.
What Does Faith Really Ask of Us?
Here’s where the conversation gets especially interesting.
Many of us grew up hearing biblical teachings about honoring our parents, loving one another, and forgiving those who hurt us.
Those teachings matter.
But how do we apply them when relationships become emotionally complicated?
Does forgiveness mean reconciliation?
Does honoring someone mean accepting harmful behavior?
Can you love someone deeply and still establish boundaries?
And can we acknowledge the pain in our family history without turning every conversation into an exercise in blame?
Dr. Howard will help us explore these questions through the lens of Christian faith and lived experience.
We’ll also examine how spiritual wisdom and psychological understanding can complement one another as we navigate relationships.
Because forgiveness doesn’t automatically rebuild trust, and love should never require someone to abandon their dignity.
This Is a Conversation, Not a Lecture
If you’ve joined us at Soul Thursdays before, you already know how we do things.
We bring the music, the laughter, the thoughtful questions, and a little of that good old-fashioned barbershop and living-room energy.
We make room for different perspectives.
We don’t expect everybody to agree.
And we certainly don’t expect anyone to have their entire life figured out.
Our goal is to create an environment where people can explore difficult topics without shame, judgment, or pressure to share more than they’re comfortable sharing.
Sometimes we’ll laugh.
Sometimes we’ll discover something uncomfortable.
And sometimes we’ll recognize a blind spot we didn’t even know we had.
That’s part of growing.
