In the midst of this year’s social and political turbulence, we at Southern Soul Live Stream recognize the need to recalibrate and communicate the goals and desires of Black men. In today’s episode, host DJ D-Rich invites a diverse group of panelists to dispel myths, confront biases, and speak their truths on relationships and dating. The main question? What do women need to know about the men they love?

Most women would say that men are complicated despite the hard exterior they often portray. One of the biggest questions the women on our podcast have is: What does it take to get a man to be emotionally available? From the men’s perspective, some of the key attributes necessary for any successful relationship are readiness, appreciation and flexibility; however, the reality is that a definitive answer does not exist. Every relationship is unique, and as we are continuously adapting and evolving, it is most important to consistently put in the work and express love to your partner through their love language.

Whether you are single, married, divorced or separated, today’s show holds wisdom for everyone. Join your host DJ D-Rich for a jam-packed episode of the Southern Soul Live Stream podcast. Enjoy poetry from some of our favorite creatives and learn more about the realities of dating and relationships through the perspectives of Black men.

Quotes

• “Being a poet and a lover of arts, I don't want someone who is bland and has no layers. I have no issue with you being complex. But the issue comes when you feel like you can't share your layers with me, where you're afraid to tell your truth or be intimate with me emotionally.” (11:06- 11:23)

• “You just have to have some ability to assess whether you and the other person are ready. You know, be mature enough and be selfless enough to think about somebody else. Know who you are! There's some real stuff around careers, income, money, children and baby daddies. All that stuff has to be assessed to see whether you're prepared and equipped to be in a relationship. And then you guys see if you really want it. (34:41-35:04)

• “A lot of times people will try to do what seems like love for them, but that may not communicate love to somebody else...and that's where the conflicts begin and when people start feeling unappreciated and unloved.” (41:04- 41:14)

• “Loving me and valuing me are two different things. If you value me, then you're going to put in the work, and if I value you, I'm going to put in the work.” (45:55- 46:02)
